TogglePhiladelphia has a way of tucking its most beautiful places out of plain sight. Valley Green Inn sits inside Wissahickon Valley Park, and on a fall afternoon in Pennsylvania, with the trees burning gold and the creek moving quietly behind the ceremony space, it felt less like a wedding venue and more like somewhere the season had arranged just for them. I’ve photographed a lot of weddings in this city, and still — this one was different from the moment I arrived.
Kelly and Josh came in with a clear vision. Their theme was “autumn academia” — fall colors, stacks of books on every table, and owls woven throughout the decor as a tribute to Kelly’s mother. Because every detail meant something, the day carried a tenderness that showed up in every photograph.

The owl details started before the dress was even on. Kelly had woven them in carefully — not as a theme imposed on the day, but as something personal carried through it. Her tattoo honoring her mother was visible from the beginning, a quiet presence that would run through every part of the day. Because her mother couldn’t be there, Kelly made sure she was still felt throughout.
The autumn academia aesthetic came through in the flat lay details as well — warm tones, intentional touches, nothing accidental. So when you look at those early photographs, the day is already telling you who Kelly is before a single vow has been spoken.

The morning continued at the Courtyard by Marriott on City Avenue in Philadelphia — Kelly and her bridesmaids all getting ready together in the same space, which meant the energy in that room was exactly what you’d hope for. Lots of laughter, everyone moving at once, the kind of organized chaos that somehow always comes together. There was joy in that room before the day had even properly started.
That laughter set the tone for everything that followed. Getting ready photographs work best when nobody’s performing for the camera, and Kelly’s crew wasn’t. They were just together, which is, in fact, the whole point.

They did their first look right on the Valley Green Inn property, and it set the tone for everything that followed. Josh turned around, Kelly was there, and the whole thing dissolved into laughter almost immediately. No dramatic pause — just two people genuinely excited to see each other. That energy, in fact, carried straight through the rest of the day.
We spent about an hour on portraits after that, walking the grounds together. Because the property gives you so much to work with — the water, the trails, the tree canopy in full fall color — we never had to manufacture a backdrop. We just moved through the space and let the day unfold around us. The light that afternoon was extraordinary.

Each moment during our time together was filled with adventure and joy!

The ceremony space sat right along the water at Valley Green Inn, with the tree canopy fully into its fall turn — deep golds filtering light down through the branches. Kelly had carried her owl tributes into the ceremony details as well, small touches placed with intention throughout the space. Together with the candlelit florals and the sound of the creek nearby, the setting felt complete before anyone took their seat.
Fall in Pennsylvania does something particular to outdoor spaces in the afternoon. The light softens, the colors deepen, and everything looks like it was always meant to look that way. That’s what the ceremony space felt like that day — not decorated, but arrived at.
The ceremony took place right along the water, and there’s a particular stillness to that spot that the photographs hold onto. Josh waited. Kelly came down. The creek kept moving, which somehow made the whole thing feel more grounded and real.
It was intimate in the way that outdoor ceremonies at Valley Green Inn tend to be — not because the guest count was small, but because the space draws people in rather than spreading them out. The wooded surroundings, the water, the fall light through the trees — all of it created something that felt less like a backdrop and more like a witness.

The reception room carried the autumn academia theme all the way through. Round tables with candlelit florals, books stacked as part of the centerpieces, and owls placed throughout — each table a small continuation of the same story Kelly had been telling all day. Because the details were consistent from getting ready through the reception, the whole day felt considered rather than assembled.
The candlelight did a lot of work in that space. It warmed everything, softened the room, and gave the photographs a glow that’s hard to manufacture artificially. That kind of lighting, combined with the fall palette Kelly had chosen, made the reception feel like an extension of the day outside rather than a departure from it.

Kelly and Josh entered together and went straight into their first dance — no long introduction, no buildup. They just came in, found each other on the floor, and started. Then, midway through, they opened it up and welcomed their guests to join them. It was a generous way to begin the evening, and the dance floor filled immediately.
At some point later in the night, Kelly changed out of her gown and into jeans and a nice shirt. It’s a small decision that says a lot about a person — comfort over performance, being present over ceremony. The dance floor photographs after that change are, still, some of my favorites from the entire day. She looked completely like herself. And that, of course, is the whole point.
